There are few things more symbolic of the rugged west than a bison. I photographed this massive bull bison in the badlands of North Dakota. With each step he kicked up the hot afternoon dust, leaving a trail behind him like smoke. What was most compelling to me, though, was his steady gaze. He was not an animal to cross, holding his own in a herd of rivals.
